The nominations for this yearŌĆÖs Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Thursday morning. And Minari was named in three categories: ŌĆ£Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture,ŌĆØ ŌĆ£Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading RoleŌĆØ and ŌĆ£Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.ŌĆØ Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. ItŌĆÖs directed and written by Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung. Yesterday, Minari only scored a foreign language film nod at the Golden Globes. Although it was filmed by an American director, financed by U.S. companies, predominantly performed by American actors, it was omitted from major categories just because 50% percent of the film was spoken in Korean, sparking a heated debate over racism. However, it seems like Minari made up for the disappointment by winning nominations not only for the ensemble but also breaking into the extremely competitive best actor race for best actor with Steven Yeun and best supporting actress with Youn Yuh Jung trophies. Especially, YounŌĆÖs nomination is all the more meaningful in that itŌĆÖs the first time that a Korean actor has joined the race for the best supporting actress award. She will be competing with Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), Olivia Colman (The Father) and Helena Zengel (News of the World).
